Scientologists are acutely aware of this. And thus they have taken the task of man’s freedom upon themselves. For as has been implied and discussed and stated in this site, the mission of Scientology involves spiritual freedom. But just as there can be no soaring flight while anchored to the ground, so there can be no true and lasting spiritual freedom while tyranny and injustice govern any man among us.

The Code of Honor of a Scientologist states quite plainly: “Your integrity to yourself is more important than your body.” And while no ethical code can be enforced, it is a beacon that stands as an ideal. To many Scientologists it is even more — it is a reality to live by. Which is why they are willing to draw that line, to persist against unfriendly fire, and to show by deeds that enough is indeed enough.

To carry these battles forward, the Church and concerned Scientologists have founded a number of nonprofit organizations such as the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) and the National Commission on Law Enforcement and Social Justice (NCLE) which seek social reform in the areas of psychiatric excess and government abuse, respectively. And, to quickly and broadly bring the results of its research in these areas and others into the light of day, the Church publishes an international journal.
