What is Scientology?
Based on the Works of L. Ron Hubbard

CHAPTER 33

THE HISTORY OF SCIENTOLOGY’S EXPANSION

The story of Dianetics and Scientology expansion is a simple one. Having developed the world’s first workable technology of the mind and an applied religious philosophy that struck a vital chord in so many people, L. Ron Hubbard found that word of his discoveries began to spread. As he continued researching, his further milestone discoveries created greater and greater interest.

To make these discoveries available, training centers, missions and churches were founded; and as more and more people discovered that Dianetics and Scientology worked, the cycle perpetuated itself.

This is the broad view. For a real sense of the story, however, one must return to early January 1950, when word of the forthcoming Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health generated so many advance orders, the publisher literally had to force his way past a mound of envelopes that had been dropped through the mail slot of his office door.
