PAST LIVES
There can be no argument that the discoveries that intelligence can improve, that memory can be traced as far back as conception, and that physical healing can be profoundly affected by mental and spiritual factors influenced popular thinking. Yet Mr. Hubbard’s quest to find the root cause of human aberration led him far beyond human development. In July 1950, after an initially skeptical review of mounting data, L. Ron Hubbard was suddenly heard addressing auditors on “the procedures of running former lives.” It was not a phenomenon he had been searching for, and he regarded it a bit tentatively at the outset. But in the end, and notwithstanding the objections from others, past lives became altogether routine. It soon became abundantly clear that man was indeed not a summation of flesh, bone and chemicals. Rather, he was a spiritual being with infinite memory and, as of then, unknown capabilities.
For the next three decades, Mr. Hubbard devoted himself to researching the fundamental nature of the human spirit and constructing an exact and workable path to total spiritual freedom which any man could walk.

By the mid-1950s, the subject of past lives had become almost passé for the thousands of Scientologists who, in daily auditing sessions, routinely recalled the details of earlier lives, memories that reached back not just a few hundred or a few thousand years, but to tens of millions of years and even earlier.
